About Marty Noble
Marty Noble is a self taught artist who grew up in a family of accomplished artists. Raised in Santa Barbara, from childhood on, her passion for art and the creative life have been her defining focus. Like many artists, she finds continual inspiration from the natural world which includes her travels through Mexico where she has lived for months at a time.
After working in several mediums she immersed herself in the ancient art of batik. In the early years she sold her batiks with success and her career as an artist was under way. While living in Ojai, California, a community known for its fine arts, she enjoyed a loyal following that kept her engaged with commission and gallery sales. There she offered weekend workshops teaching the art of batik.
In the state of Chiapas, Mexico she spent time visiting, studying and sketching the attire and artifacts of the indigenous people she encountered. In Oaxaca she visited the surrounding villages, renowned for the many artisans where most villages specialized in a particular craft. There she learned about Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which marks the arrival of the holiday in November with its associated festivities. With the rising popularity of the holiday around the globe, she has been inspired to design a series of sugar skulls (Calaveras), Catrinas and other decorative symbols relating to this celebratory tradition.
Marty has also spent time in Europe, Israel, Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam and New Zealand. Peoples of the world and their environs developed as her most sought after subject matter in Southern California galleries. While in Europe she gathered and interpreted images of the folk art genre which she stitched and painted onto fabric squares for quilting.
Over the years she explored other mediums and found watercolor to be another favorite medium.
She enjoys photography, gardening, hiking and excursions to remote places.
